Are you stuck in such a job where the only best remedy is to get out of the job? Or the work you are doing is absolutely obsolete, as the skills which are being used are replaced by technology? Your co-workers are given opportunities and you sit around closed doors begging for some work from your boss? If you look at all this scenario then your career is in a standstill mode. "A dead end job is a job where there is no chance to get it into a higher paid position" you are stuck up in board room with the same monotonous task which is making your CV in a rust mode. Every day going to the workplace looks like a headache where you are never offered good projects for your career advancements and you even don't get an appreciation for your work.



Here are some warning signs that you are in a dead end job:
  • Your work offers no change in routine: You have been doing the same dump work for more than 5 years and your career objectives don't at all align with what you currently do. If your position is static and you don't get new responsibilities even after offering new innovative ideas on the subjects then you are probably in a dead end job.
  • Your Boss Doesn't Tap Your Skills: the boss doesn't tap into your skills and gives you work which is beneath your abilities to destroy your career growth. Request to give you more challenging projects have been seriously ignored. 
  • The manager doesn't give a crap to your career goals: Whenever you talk to the manager about your career goals he/she doesn't care or don't give importance to it. You are not at all asked about your professional goals or future career plans. If you constantly murmur about your career goals and some new projects there is a good chance that you might even get abuses from the boss. This is a bad sign that your boss only cares about her position in the company.
  • The company is an old school: You have suggested a number of ways to improve the job but your manager doesn't give a crap to it or ignores it. Your ideas are dumped into deep garbage which means that that manager does not give you the due respect you deserve due to corrupt practices in the company.
  • Bias & Favouritism in management practices: You notice that your colleagues are getting opportunities that you don't get at all. This happens because your manager practices bias & favoritism towards its employees. If you are not on the managements favorite side then you might end up doing the same work with no advancements in the future.
  • Your manager got his/her position by illegal/unethical activities: if you might have noticed that your boss has been in his/her position forever and he/she got those positions by illegal activities or by buttering of senior management officials then there is no chance for you to advance in that company because the company has either murdered it's work ethics or you are working in a company where cultural work ethic values are missing and you don't seem to be comfortable with this tyrant atmosphere. In all, you can say that the company doesn't want you to grow on your knowledge, skills, and abilities then it's the worst sign for you it indicates that the company doesn't like your presence.
  • Employees Leave All The Time: you notice around you that most of the employees leave the company frequently due to the horrible work atmosphere and the management seems to be very chill about it. Which means they will never create a happy atmosphere for work or change the faulty work environment.
  • The company hires outside talent: whenever higher positions open up the company hires outsiders rather than from promoting within the department which is not a good sign at all.
  • Your manager is only interested in saving his/her place in the company: your manager only cares about her position in the organization by exploiting their innocent employees and most of the employees feel that their career is ruined in the current company then it's a big sign that there are a number of frustrated employees who are struggling to move up in the company.
  • Any shoddy work accepted: you give your best efforts in the job and you see that other get off with with a shoddy and a substandard work and if it happens regularly then it's a big sign of a job that has a dead future.
  • Clashes in the cultural environment: you notice that your cultural value and firms cultural value does not match at all. Both of you are not at all comfortable with each other. Seeing this situation your career is not likely to move in that company.
  • Layoffs in the industry: the industry is conducting big layoffs and your desk is clean with no projects due to no fault of yours then it's a very big indication of a dead end job where company's profits are stagnant or down with heavy losses.
  • You feel unchallenged by your job: the work you are doing in unchallenging and monotonous and your skills are not being tapped and in layman's term the work which your doing can be easily done by machine or being replaced by technology.
  • There is too much sense of comfort zone: one of the biggest indications of a dead end job is that you are in a deep comfort zone and you don't want to move up. You feel very much relaxed in your position and enjoy your comfort zone which is a big red flag.
  • Your CV is gathering dust: your CV is just getting rusted and spoiled when you try to pull out your CV you really don't know what to write there or specify.
  • No change in pay, title and responsibilities: you are doing the same dump work without any change in pay, tittle and responsibilities. You might have been passed on for promotion but you have been always ignored to give mountain breaking task which can boost up your CV.
